Tennis: Catford Wanderers Ladies second team defeat Beckenham

Catford Wanderers Ladies second team were victorious in their opening North Kent Tennis summer fixture against Beckenham, writes Denis Costelloe.

Donna Gabriel and Julie Taylor picked up two wins, defeating Maria Chandler and Kate Ting 6-2 6-4 and they had little difficulty with the visitors’ second pair of Lizzie Grumbach and Lien Hung, winning 6-0 6-1.

Wanderers’ second pair of Terri Borg and Sue Rice Vine also won against Chandler and Ting and shared sets with Grumbach and Hung 4-6 6-4.

The match result was 3.5-0.5 to Catford

  • Congratulations on winning! It was a great morning of tennis which we all really enjoyed. A shame it has been marred by reading this article.

    As one of the second pair I found the comment of winning with ‘little difficulty’ rather graceless and somewhat upsetting.

    I have to say it wasn’t a phrase I expected to see in the local press especially when we are all encouraging members to play in teams.
