Celebrating culture, underneath arches
A new splash of colour has brightened up a corner of Camberwell – thanks to the influence of artist Anish Kapoor.
The mural under the railway arches in Wyndham Road is called Patterns of Camberwell and was created by Joel Gray, a master stone carver for Mr Kapoor, in collaboration with schoolchildren.
It celebrates Camberwell’s religious, cultural and artistic traditions and was unveiled in time for the Camberwell Arts Festival, which runs until June 12.
Mr Gray said: “The Patterns of Camberwell mural is based on the central idea of expanding geometric shapes which draw on the religious, cultural and artistic traditions that are part of the DNA of Camberwell.
“The idea for the intricate repeated design inside hexagons came from workshops I ran with the students at Highshore School and Arc All Saints Academy.
“Both schools are next to our studio in Camberwell, and it has been great to have the opportunity to develop this mural and be part of such a vibrant community.”
Will Reeves, from the collaborating Camberwell Identity Group, said: “We have been working closely with Anish Kapoor’s studio and the community for the past six months on the development of this mural.
“Joel has created an incredibly unique mural which captures the DNA of Camberwell, with which we are delighted. This mural continues to enrich our history as a cultural hotspot and build pride in Camberwell.”
