Reunited….and it feels so good for two Millwall fans’ favourites
Shaun Williams is delighted to be reunited with Millwall legend Neil Harris – and has revealed that he was close to making the move to Gillingham in January.
The 35-year-old played under Harris when he was in charge of the Lions. They won promotion from League One in the 2016-17 campaign before missing out on the Championship play-offs by two points the following season.
Williams made 252 appearances and scored 18 goals for the South London club.
The Irishman signed for the Gills, relegated to League Two at the end of last season, after being released by Portsmouth.
Williams told Gillingham’s club website: “I’m really pleased to be here. Excited for the opportunity ahead and grateful to be working with Neil Harris and Dave Livermore again.
“He [Harris] was massive [in my decision making]. When he took over in January – he tried to get it done then and I wanted to come and help but I couldn’t due to the short time he had. To get it done now is great and I’m really excited.
“He was manager at Millwall for three and a bit seasons, we had a great relationship and I really enjoyed working with him. I like his philosophies and how he builds his teams in terms of character and professionalism within the ranks. I wanted to be part of that again.
“There was the disappointment of relegation for Gillingham. Hopefully now it’s going to be a fresh start, this season we are going to have strive to be the best we can.”
