Two former Charlton players on the move…and Addicks have sell-on clauses for both

Two former Charlton Athletic players have been on the move this week with the South London club potentially set to benefit.

The Addicks negotiated sell-on percentages for Alfie Doughty and Brendan Wiredu when the pair left SE7.

Winger Doughty signed for Luton Town yesterday with Wiredu completing a switch to Fleetwood Town today.

The Hatters are thought to have paid in the region of £500,000 for Doughty. The 22-year-old came through the Addicks youth ranks but refused to sign a new contract after the club’s relegation from the Championship. A serious hamstring injury sidelined him in the first part of the following campaign before Doughty, who had also attracted the attention of Celtic, signed for Stoke City for an undisclosed fee in January 2021.

Wiredu is another product of Charlton’s academy. The 22-year-old left for Colchester United in February 2021 after a successful loan spell with the U’s.

Wiredu has signed a three-year contract with the Cod Army, who describe the undisclosed fee as six figures.

The Addicks’ potential to receive a really substantial sum rests on Burnley keeper Nick Pope. Again they have a sell-on clause, the percentage is only paid on profit on the original fee, and their former stopper is reportedly close to signing for Newcastle United in a deal costing between £8-£10million.
