Great music and versatility makes Tyler the Creator one of the great rap entertainers

Tyler the Creator closed Wireless Festival at Crystal Palace Park in style with an electric headline set, writes Adam Davidson.

Wireless returned to South London as one of the hottest tickets of the year saw performances from ASAP Rocky, J Cole, Chris Brown and Baby Keem over a stacked weekend.

The first week of the festival culminated with a headline set from US rapper Tyler the Creator.

The energy and atmosphere at Crystal Palace Park was disappointing throughout the majority of acts on the final day but there was no chance of that happening for Tyler the Creator as the anticipation was building for the headline act.

Tyler the Creator came on stage in a mountain jacket, knapsack and walking stick, scaling the idyllic Austrian-alps set design before fireworks were let off and he launched into Corso and Lemonhead.

After the opening two songs he sat down on the set and soaked up the atmosphere before saying ‘Somebody tell Theresa May I’m back!’

The former-Home Secretary Theresa May banned the US rapper from entering the country in 2015 because of lyrics he wrote in 2009.

He then performed fan favourites ‘Yonkers’, ‘Tamale’, ‘911 / See You Again’ and Earwuake which all went down a treat for the London crowd.

One of the highlights of the set came towards the end for a crazy performance of New Magic Wand, mosh pits opened and pyrotechnics were let off as the utopian hills became apocalyptic.

The US rapper has the ability to combine great music and versatility with comedic timing which makes him great music and versatility one of the great entertainers in the rap genre and the perfect headliner act to close the first week of Wireless.
