Ryan Leonard could be a doubt for Millwall’s Den friendly against Hammarby

Ryan Leonard is a doubt to feature for Millwall in their friendly against Hammarby on Wednesday night.

The Lions look set to include Leeds United midfielder Jamie Shackleton in their squad. He was undergoing his medical this morning ahead of a season-long loan switch.

George Honeyman, Mason Bennett and Tom Bradshaw are all recovering from knocks.

“George and Mason are due to train today and Bradders trained yesterday,” said Millwall manager Gary Rowett. “Lenny is a little bit tight in his glute, so he’ll probably sit out today’s session.

“We’ll have a look at where we are at the end of the session. Part of Friday’s game and Wednesday’s game is to still build those minutes up, not looking at the exact team and what we want to do. What we don’t want to do is risk players unnecessarily if we don’t have to. We’ll try and make some reasonable decisions.”

Millwall moved their training session forward today to try and combat the red-hot weather.

“It’s not ideal conditions but we’ve got to train and got to work, to maintain the work we’re doing,” said Rowett. “Like most people you are trying to be sensible. We’re training at 8:45-9:00 and it’s going to be 31 degrees. You can’t flog the players in that heat and expect them to feel good on the back end of it and feel ready for a match.

“We’ve got to be careful, get out there for an hour and do a bit of work, try to shorten the time and intensity down. It’s only a couple of days and then tomorrow it cools down and gets back to normal – who’d have said it gets back to a sensible heat of about 22 or 23 degrees? Normally that would be the height of summer and people flocking to Cornwall. It’s amazing what a couple of ridiculous days of heat does. We’ve got to be safe and not put the players under undo stress, exercise-wise.”
