Dining Out by Paloma Lacy

Many have asked how Peckham Cellars could improve on perfection.

This South-east London restaurant already has Michelin Bib Gourmand status and now has Pablo Urain Alfonso at the helm.

Originally from Spain’s culinary home of San Sebastian, Pablo, aged 33, has an impressive CV, which lists Crispin, Nordic bakery and Morso.

The restaurant promises it will maintain the broadly-British menu, with Mediterranean influences bound to creep into upcoming menus.

If July’s menu is anything to go by, that’s already happened.

Gilda – Cantabrian anchovy, Gordal olive and guindilla pepper; Red pepper and caramelised onion croquetas; seabass ceviche and new potatoes bravas with aioli are just some of the dishes that give the game away.

Open for a meal or perhaps just for a few small plates to accompany an aperitif in the sunshine, Peckham Cellars is known for superb negronis and a cellar full of wine, always with a choice of English sparkling wine that’s great for this hot summer.

Everyone loves houmous but I’m starting to wonder if you’ve really tried it until you’ve had Ramona’s.

A range of Middle-Eastern inspired treats, Ramona believes bigger is better.

Her houmous comes in 500g pots and you wonder how you’ll get through it but blink and it’s gone.

It really is that good. It got my vote in terms of texture – I often find the so called truly authentic brands far to smooth for my taste.

It comes in three flavours: Original, Jalapeno and Red Pepper. RRP: £2.50 for major supermarkets.

Unsurprisingly, the frozen falafel proved a huge hit and was easily the best the testers had tried.

A 500g bag is £3.30 and a great addition to any picnic spread. There are also Spinach & Kale and Quinoa versions.

As company mottos go, this one’s pretty good.

Fatso Colombian chocolate is a great believer in ‘From Farm To Face’.

Unsure if the sentiment is a sustainable one or a greedy one but given the brand is an advocate of ‘devouring’ chocolate, it’s probably a heady mix of box.

Fatso is a dark chocolate lovers’ dream, with ethical credentials based in its insistence in using singlem origin cocoa.

Above all, it’s a fine bit of the sweet stuff.

The flavours are quirkily named and deliver.

My favourite was Nan’s Stash – peanut, toffee and digestive biscuits.

The other two are pretty good too – Morn’n Glory – cornflake, toast and marmalade – and Home Run – salted pretzel, whole almond
and honeycomb.
