Ben Garner admits Chuks Aneke has to improve fitness record as striker is set for scan on latest knock

Charlton forward Chuks Aneke is set to be sent for a scan after hobbling out of Friday evening’s pre-season friendly with Welling United.

The striker was withdrawn with a calf problem during the 3-0 victory over the non-leaguers at the Addicks’ Sparrows Lane training ground in New Eltham on Friday night.

Aneke has suffered with spells out throughout his career – including missing a large chunk of the second-half of last season after returning to The Valley from Birmingham City in January.

And new boss Ben Garner has admitted that the 29-year-old will need to improve his fitness to fit into the club’s new high-pressing style of play.

“He’s got some discomfort in his calf,” explained Garner, following his side’s home pre-season defeat to Championship Swansea on Saturday.

“We will scan that first thing Monday morning and see what the outcome is. He’s deconditioned. We’ve been trying to get him into condition and unfortunately, we’ve had a little setback there.

“That’s something moving forward – he has to get into better shape to be able to play the way we play and the way that we compete. Fingers crossed there’s nothing too serious and we can get him back quickly.

“We’re still looking to strengthen without doubt. First port of call, we’re hoping that isn’t serious with Chuks. He’s got fantastic ability and on his day can score and create goals against anyone in the division. But we need to get him into a place physically where he can do that and impact games.”
