Docklands triathlon beckons next for gold-standard Yee

By Yann Tear

He has yet to confirm his participation, but organisers are hoping we will see Alex Yee on the start line for the start of this year’s Super League Triathlon series.

Fresh from his double gold performances in Birmingham at the Commonwealth Games, Lewisham’s Olympic star is expected to defend his $1.8 million Super League series title on September 4 at West India Quay.

And there could be even greater interest, given that another of GB’s outstanding triathletes, Johnny Brownlee, is expected to make his return to action, having missed the Commonwealth Games through injury.

The action is all free for spectators, who turned out in their thousands for last year’s event in London, with Yee taking part then.

The Brits already confirmed to be joining Brownlee on the startlist are fellow Tokyo 2020 gold medallist Georgia Taylor-Brown, Commonwealth Games competitors Dan Dixon, Beth Potter, Sian Rainsley and Non Stanford, as well as rising star Kate Waugh.

International powerhouses of the sport will be back looking to disrupt British success on home soil; with New Zealand’s 2022 World Championship hopeful Hayden Wilde, France’s former Super League Champion and two-time World Champion Vincent Luis, and the USA’s current world number two Taylor Spivey all confirmed.

With a slight course change from last year seeing the finish line outside the grand Marriott Hotel, the athletes will line-up on the North Dock to take-on the notorious Triple Mix race format of swim-bike-run, run-bike-swim, bike-swim-run.

The racing starts at 12pm, with the elite women taking to the water first, followed by the elite men.

After London, the Championship Series continues on to Munich, Malibu and Toulouse.
