Addicks hero on his penalty calmness and that wonder strike

Aaron Henry says he was happy to step up to the plate in Charlton’s penalty shootout win – because he is so confident about his technique. 

He may only be 18, but he has a wise head and his introduction just past the hour against QPR was a masterstroke, as the midfielder thumped in a glorious 90th minute equaliser before putting away on of the five spot-kicks which sank Rangers. 

“The gaffer asked me if I wanted to take one and I said yes,” he revealed afterwards.  

“I think a player that’s good technically – and I think I am – should always take a penalty so I’d never step down from that. I was confident and I’m glad I put it away.  

“I just sort of backed myself. Knew which corner I wanted to go in. 

“I’m absolutely over the moon. Obviously to get on in the first place is good for me – a chance to showcase to the manager what I can do and to get a goal like that I’m really pleased. And obviously going through as well against a Championship side – it was a great night.” 

It was a case of third time lucky for Henry on the night, who feels he might have scored from two other half-chances which came his way before the wonder strike. 

“I was definitely frustrated with myself,” he said. “For me, balls running out on the edge of the box is stuff I dream of. I didn’t take the first two that I had. The third was a bit sweeter, so I was buzzing with it. 

“It’s similar to one I scored a few years ago against Swansea, on the volley, on the swivel. It just felt so sweet. I couldn’t actually see it go in the net because I was on the floor. I watched it on the screen when I was walking back to the halfway line. I’m really pleased with it. 

“I love scoring goals. Especially from midfield with goals like that. It’s what I enjoy. It’s definitely something I can do more, especially in play. I like to think I’m a threat from set pieces but I need to score more goals like that. I’m looking forward to it.” 

Henry added: “It’s really exciting times. I think since the gaffer’s come in, he’s really good with the young players. He’s very clear in what he wants and us, as young players, that’s all we want really. Honesty and a chance.”
