Charlton’s EFL Cup progression has plenty of plusses for teenage midfield prospect

Aaron Henry reckons that Charlton’s EFL Cup progression is an extra opportunity for him to impress.

The midfielder, 18, played 85 minutes in Tuesday’s 1-0 win at Walsall before being forced off with cramp.

He also scored a spectacular winner against QPR in the first round.

Charlton have been paired with Stevenage in the third round of the competition, which does not take place until November.

“These are the type of games when players come in and it is a chance to show they should be starting in the league – it’s the same for me,” said Henry. “I progressed really well on loan last season and this competition is a chance to force your way into the team.

“The team is doing well, so it is going to be tough – but I want to take every opportunity that I can. There are some great players in midfield and it’s also really good to learn off experienced pros like Dobbo.”

Henry also had positive words to say about boss Ben Garner.

“He’s been really good – all the boys are on the same page,” added the teenager. “He’s honest and makes it clear what he wants from you. He tells me what I need to do better and tells me when I do well.

“We started the game really well in the first 10-15 minutes and then sort of dropped off at the end of the first half [at Walsall]. The gaffer said to us at half-time that we need to be better and we showcased that in the second half. It was a great goal from DJ.

“I had cramp in the calf, which was a bit frustrating. I wanted to get through 90 minutes but it is what it is.”
