Fatal Croydon collision between biker and ambulance

A motorcylist has died after a collision with an ambulance which was answering an emergency call in Croydon.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses and information.

Police were called shortly after 6pm yesterday after the incident at the junction of Purley Way – the A23 – and Edgehill Road. The London Fire Brigade and London’s Air Ambulance were also called out.

The ambulance was en route to an emergency call at the time of the collision and its crew provided first aid.

Despite their efforts, the rider – a man, believed to be aged in his 50s – died at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed.

Detectives from the Roads and Transport Policing Command are investigating.

There have been no arrests. Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.

Any witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage is asked to call police via 101, quoting reference CAD 6351/30Aug.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 6.01pm yesterday (30 August) to reports of a road traffic collision in Purley, Croydon.

“We sent a number of resources to the scene, including two ambulance crews, a medic in a fast response car, two incident response officers and a clinical team leader.

“We treated one patient at the scene but sadly, despite the best efforts of our medics, they were pronounced dead at the scene.”
