Millwall striker Lee Gregory makes claim for goal against Fulham – meaning Tom Elliott’s wait to score at Den again could continue
BY RICHARD CAWLEY
Tom Elliott’s wait for a goal at The Den may not be over – after Lee Gregory also put in a claim for Millwall’s goal in Tuesday’s EFL Cup loss to Fulham.
Elliott was awarded it on the night but his fellow frontman reckons he got a helping touch.
If Gregory does get the goal it would mean that Elliott has gone 13 matches without scoring for the Lions. His last time on the scoresheet at The Den was on August 15 2017.
“Tom wins the header and thought it was his goal but Greggers said he has touched the ball from in front of the goalkeeper,” explained Millwall manager Neil Harris.
“I’m not sure how we resolve this one, we need video evidence or photographic evidence – we’re waiting on the dubious goals panel to make an announcement.
“For Greggs to claim it we’ll need to see video footage otherwise they [the football authorities] will not overturn something they think is correct. They wait for the various angles.
“Centre-forwards want to score goals – they both want the goal.
“I’m pleased with the goal. Tom gets that first connection and Greggers is sniffing in the six-yard box, it is something we talk about quite a lot.
‘I’m not overly fussed who gets the goal. It was a moment that got us back into the game and it is an area of play where we have to be really dominant in both boxes.”
Harris is Millwall’s all-time record goalscorer, and knows just how much it means to be credited correctly with hitting the back of the net.
“If you’ve scored then you’ve scored,” he said. “You make your life on scoring goals.
“So if you have got one, especially when goals are not easy to come by for us at the moment, then you want to be rewarded.
“You saw the reaction of both players after, they really upped it and kicked on.
“I’d love for both of them to get the goal for their confidence.”
Gregory had scored 66 goals in 163 matches for Millwall prior to the midweek clash with the west Londoners – Elliott has netted six times since his move from AFC Wimbledon in the summer of 2017 but has started only 15 times.
Gregory made his 200th appearance for Millwall in the Fulham game.
