Bromley move was an easy call after midfielder’s Charlton career was ended

James Vennings says it was an easy decision to sign for Bromley following his release by Charlton Athletic in the summer.

The 21-year-old saw a decade-long association with the Addicks ended when he was let go in May.

Only a day earlier Vennings had been celebrating at Wembley, part of the Ravens side which beat Wrexham 1-0 to claim the FA Trophy for the first time in the club’s history.

Vennings, who made four first-team appearances for Charlton, spent the second half of the 2021-22 campaign on loan at Hayes Lane.

“Wembley was a big moment and I enjoyed my time here before,” Vennings told the South London Press. “Bromley put an offer in, a contract on the table, and I thought ‘Why not? I can go and get games in the National League’. It’s been good.”

Bromley beat Oldham Athletic 3-0 on Saturday with Vennings playing in central midfield.

“It was a good performance from the boys, we were dominant from start to finish,” he said.

“We probably could’ve scored more goals, myself included. They tried to pass it but our press and our reaction was very good after losing the ball.”

Bromley ensured that former Everton coach David Unsworth did not have a productive start to life as Latics boss.
The former Toffees defender succeeded John Sheridan last Tuesday.

“We didn’t give them a yard,” said Vennings.

“We knew they would change their style a little bit, but we didn’t know what to expect. We did well to adapt to it.”

Bromley have won their last five matches at home – scoring 10 goals and only conceding once.

It is their away form, just three points from a possible 12, which is preventing them from flying even higher in the National League.

Bromley head to Solihull Moors tomorrow.

“We just have to pick our away form up a bit,” said Vennings. “But we’re turning our place into a fortress.

“Home form is important, but if we can start putting the away form with it then we will be right amongst the play-offs and promotion spots. We’ve just got to keep pushing.”

Bromley are fifth in the table.
