‘They’re really happy with his development’ – Charlton boss on break clause in Jesurun Rak-Sakyi Palace loan deal

Ben Garner has described Charlton Athletic as the “best place” for Crystal Palace loanee Jesurun Rak-Sakyi.

The Addicks boss has also explained that Rak-Sakyi’s parent club have signalled they are happy with how the 20-year-old is developing at The Valley.

The Southwark-born winger has started every game in League One under Garner since joining in the summer window. Rak-Sakyi scored the only goal in Charlton’s 1-0 win away to Shrewsbury on the weekend.

Palace youngster Rak-Sakyi, who penned a new five-year deal with the Eagles before joining Charlton, has three goals and two assists in 12 League One appearances.

“There is a break clause in pretty much every loan now,” explained Garner to the South London Press when asked whether there had been any indication from Palace about what they planned to do with Rak-Sakyi beyond January.

“I’m not aware of many that don’t have a break clause in a season-long loan, because the parent club have to protect themselves. If you loan someone out and they’re just sitting on the bench or not playing, then you want to have the option to recall.

“I speak with them pretty much on a weekly basis, and all my communication with Crystal Palace sounds like they’re really happy with Jes’ development.

“We’re in constant communication about what he’s doing well and also with where he needs to improve. As a loan so far, it’s been positive, both for Jes, for Crystal Palace, and for us.

“I honestly think this is the best place for him. He’s playing regularly, he’s getting developed on the training ground, and it’s a nice setting for him as he’s close to home and still around his family.

“He’s going to get better as the season progresses.

“That challenge of playing 35 to 40 games for a young player, if he does that this season for us, then he has done great for Charlton this season, but also he would have made massive leaps forward in his career and in the development that Crystal Palace will want.”
