Crystal Palace boss Vieira says Malcolm Ebiowei will learn from penalty shoot-out miss against Newcastle United

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira has backed Malcolm Ebiowei to bounce back from his miss in Wednesday night’s EFL Cup defeat at Newcastle United.

Former Charlton keeper Nick Pope saved three penalties after the tie at St James’ Park finished 0-0.

Bermondsey-raised Ebiowei, 19, had the chance to take the spot-kicks to sudden death but was denied by the England stopper.

“Of course he is disappointed like everyone else,” Vieira told Palace TV.

“We all feel sorry for him but sometimes, as a young player, you have to go through these moments to learn and understand everything in the game. It is really important.

“He will come back from that. We will give him the support that he needs.

“Overall we defended well because they didn’t create chances at all. We didn’t do enough to hurt them in behind.

“On penalties it is all about calmness and conviction and we didn’t have enough of that.

“It was close. It always hurts to lose a cup game, especially on penalties. We wanted to go to the next round and we had a couple of situations in the first half, a couple of chances we don’t take.”
