Week from hell: Murder investigation launched as 5th killing in 7 days recorded in South London
Five people have been killed in the space of a week as the slaughter of young men escalated across South London.
It brings to 40 the number of killings in South London since December 31 – almost double the number who died last year.
The crimes happened over a wide area south of the Thames and the victims were aged 15, 16, 17, 22 and 38.
The latest killing happened last night, Monday November 5, after a 16-year-old was found with fatal injuries.
Police were called to Greenleaf Close, Tulse Hill, at around 11pm to reports of a shooting.
Officers and paramedics attended and found a 16-year-old unconscious in the street.
The boy was pronounced dead at 11.41pm. His next of kin are aware.
At this early stage, it is believed the boy’s injuries are stab rather than gunshot wounds. This would mean that every killing in this week from hell was committed with a blade.
Two of the other victims were from the constituency of Labour MP for Lewisham West and Penge, Ellie Reeves.
She wrote on Twitter: “Devastated to hear about the murder on Samos Road. The second murder in my constituency in 72 hours. I am waiting for further details but my thoughts are with the victim and their family. This has to stop.”
The first in Lewisham came when 15-year-old Jay Hughes, also known as Jay Sewell, was stabbed to death outside a Morley’s chicken outlet in Randlesdown Road, Bellingham on Thursday.
In the second, a 22-year-old man was stabbed to death at 12.30pm on Sunday in Samos Road, Anerley. An air ambulance was also scrambled but despite paramedics’ efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 1pm.
Two men – aged 19 and 21 – have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently in custody at a South London Police Station in relation to this case.
Between those murders came the killing of Malcolm Mide-Madariola, 17, outside Clapham South Tube station at 5pm on Friday.
Rocky Djelal, pictured, from Rotherhithe, died after being attacked by a man carrying a plastic bag who casually walked up to him in Southwark Park, stabbed him and walked off as children enjoyed the sunshine in a playground nearby.
