Four takeaways from Millwall’s 1-1 draw with Wigan – Flemming a class act but goals need to start coming from other attackers

Millwall had to settle for a solitary Championship point after a 1-1 draw against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

The Lions are seventh in the standings.

Here are Richard Cawley’s takeaways.

FLEMMING STANDS OUT

Not for the first time this season, Millwall’s club record signing delivered the goods. On an afternoon when the Lions laboured in the final third, the Amsterdam-born attacker once again underlined what a fine finisher he is. Flemming produced a first-time strike after Danny McNamara’s clipped diagonal ball was chested down by Tom Bradshaw for his ninth goal in 19 appearances for the South Londoners.

The 24-year-old also set up Bradshaw early on, the striker’s prodded effort being pushed away by Wigan keeper Jamie Jones. Jones also dived to his right to push away a Flemming free-kick in the second half.

The number 10 had the most touches and passes out of any of Millwall’s attacking players but drifted into more of a wide right role in the closing stages.

OTHER ATTACKERS NEED TO START DELIVERING

Millwall have failed to score in four of their last six matches, with Flemming has scored four of their five goals over that period.

The Lions need other players to hit the back of the net.

Andreas Voglsammer is yet to score for Millwall but had a great chance to rectify that in the first half yesterday. Mason Bennett did brilliantly to drive down the left and his whipped cross was perfect for the German frontman, but he sent his header over the top.

Bradshaw’s role is about far more than just scoring, with his nuisance value to defenders and graft appreciated by Rowett, but his four goals this season have come in two matches – and he hasn’t scored since his excellent hat-trick against Watford on October 19.

Bennett, like Voglsammer, is waiting to open his account in the campaign. Again, that doesn’t mean he didn’t contribute yesterday. He gave Wigan captain Tendayi Darikwa problems down the Latics’ right and it ended up with the full-back being cautioned for one foul to take him out of his stride. He also picked out Billy Mitchell perfectly in the 54th minute but the midfielder, not renowned for his scoring prowess, struck straight at Jones.

WIGAN GOT LUCKY WITH OPENER

George Long had to deny Nathan Broadhead in the opening seconds at The Den but Wigan did not create a whole lot of clearcut chances.

There was plenty of fortune about the first goal of Kolo Toure’s reign as new Latics boss. George Saville nearly nicked the ball off Nathan Broadhead in the box and then Will Keane’s shot looked to be covered by Long. Instead the ball came back off the unwitting Callum Lang – with Long already grounded after diving to his left – leaving Keane to convert at the second attempt.

Millwall have not lost to Wigan in their last six meetings in SE16. New manager bounce did see the visitors end their run of conceding at least two goals in their last five away matches, but they didn’t really threaten too often to win at The Den for the first time since April 2013.

SHOULD FORM BE A CONCERN?

It depends how you look at it, because you can paint a couple of different complexions.

Millwall are 18th in the form table for their results over the last six matches – averaging a point per game. But they are third in the standings if you stretch that over the previous 10 games (18), with only Coventry (22) and Burnley (23) amassing more points.

The Championship is a grind and you’re going to get lean spells. Three of their last five matches have been draws, always a likely outcome when the set-pieces are not quite on point – Millwall didn’t do enough with the four corners they had on Saturday.

With only three points separating seventh to 15th, the Lions can drop fairly rapidly down the table if they can’t get results at Luton Town next weekend and then when they head to Watford on Boxing Day.

Millwall are unbeaten in six at The Den, but are 23rd in the away league table.
