Patrick Vieira slams “stupid” Aston Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez after World Cup antics

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira has described Emiliano Martinez’s decisions as “stupid” after Argentina’s penalty shootout win over France in the 2022 Qatar World Cup final.

Martinez conceded three goals and one penalty from Kylian Mbappe in the final at the Lusail Stadium, with the game finishing in a 3-3 draw and Argentina winning on penalties.

The Aston Villa and Argentina number one has since gone on to call for a “minute’s silence” for PSG forward Mbappe in the dressing room after the Game.

And in the victory parade, Martinez was seen holding a baby doll with Mbappe’s face on it.

The French FA have lodged a formal complaint to the Argentinian FA over Martinez’s behaviour.

Mbappe won the Golden Boot at the tournament after he scored eight times for Didier Deschamps’ side.

“When you talking about the abuse and the comments that he [Mbappe] received after the World Cup, I think that is damaging the game and himself,” said Vieira, who won the 1998 World Cup with France.

“Some of the pictures that I saw from the Argentina goalkeeper took away a little bit from what Argentina achieved at the World Cup.

“I don’t think that they really needed that. You can’t control sometimes people’s emotions or decisions, but that was a stupid decision from Martinez to do that.”

“Yes, I was really disappointed because I heard the same songs as you – I was really disappointed.

“I want to have a picture of the Argentina fans with the passion and the love they showed during those games.

“Of course, they won the World Cup, but in the stands, they were the best as well.

“I want to keep that in my mind and not think about those stupid fans who put some darkness on top of what Argentina achieved on and off the field.

“This is the dark side of the Argentina World Cup.”

  • Typical french man and ex player. Moaning because his country lost to Argentina. Don’t see him condemning Mbappe for his antics when Kane missed. Don’t see them complaining when they cheated along with the ref against England. And am not English so have no reason to argue or moan over that game. But all if France is mocking other teams, now one player is mocked they moan and sign a petition for a replay. Tough so move in and stop crying. Imagine how the hand if God would have felt for your country like it did England? Oh wait Henry also cheated along with the ref and FIFA that time as well. Mbappe want the glory but can’t take criticism.
