Bromley boss happy with double Southend United shutout

Bromley manager Andy Woodman was pleased that his side kept back-to-back clean sheets against Southend United over the festive period.

The Ravens drew 0-0 at Hayes Lane on New Year’s Day to follow up a 1-0 victory at Roots Hall on Boxing Day.

Sunday’s stalemate saw Woodman’s side move five points behind the National League play-off spots.

Woodman said: “They had a little bit more of the ball than we wanted them to have in the first half, but it didn’t hurt us too much.

“In the second half, we were a little bit more on the front foot.

“It wasn’t to be today [Sunday]. I’m more chuffed that we have got two clean sheets on the spin now against Southend, who, let’s be honest, are way bigger than us.

“I’m chuffed to bits with my guys.

“We had some good opportunities. We just didn’t have that final moment, which was a little frustrating, but we were up against a decent team. For us to take four points from two games in quick succession – I’m not too disappointed with that.

“There are a lot of positives out there for me today.”

Woodman was able to name goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook in the starting line-up for the first time since he was forced off in the 3-0 win over Maidstone with a torn tendon on September 17.

Tom Smith, 20, had been starting in Charles-Cook’s place while he recovered from injury.

“Goalkeeping aside, Reice’s character around the place is electric – we missed that,” said Woodman.

“He’s one of us. It was great to have him out there. I had a really professional chat with Tom before the game.

“He must be commended for how he has conducted himself and how professional he has been.

“Reice went out there and got a clean sheet. All round at the back, we were pretty solid.”

Bromley are back in National League action on Saturday when they travel to Altrincham. It is the first of three away fixtures with high-flying Wrexham (January 10) and Torquay United (January 17) to follow.
