Crystal Palace boss Vieira felt 4-0 defeat to Tottenham didn’t reflect derby encounter at Selhurst Park

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira felt that tonight’s 4-0 defeat to Tottenham did not reflect the contest.

The Eagles have shipped seven goals in their last two matches at Selhurst Park – without reply – also suffering derby punishment at the hands of Fulham on Boxing Day.

Vieira’s men had the better of the opening 45 minutes but Spurs, sent out early for the second half by Antonio Conte, produced a quickfire double for Harry Kane inside the opening eight minutes.

Matt Doherty added a third before Heung-Min Son sealed a first win in 2023 for the north Londoners.

“It was a tough night in the end,” Vieira told Sky Sports. “Of course, to concede four goals is not something pleasant at all. It doesn’t reflect the quality of the game we played today. We deserved more, especially in the first half with the situations we created.

“When they scored that first goal it made it really difficult for us and when those players have a little bit of space they can hurt any team.

“The way they managed the game and those difficult periods shows the huge difference between the teams. The experience they have got was a massive factor on the game.

“We had situations [in the first half]. We weren’t clinical enough and we didn’t take our chances well enough. We had a couple of passes to players in better positions to score. Our last ball in the final third wasn’t good enough.

“Lloris made a couple of important saves. We were brave and we showed quality. At the same time, the fact we conceded four goals shows there are still a lot of things we need to improve.

“We have young players in our squad and team, those kind of games need to be managed better. There are a lot of things we have to take from the game. You have to give credit to Tottenham because they looked really solid and in control. They were waiting for the moment to take their chances. The quality they have, they don’t need to create a lot to score.

“The 4-0 is hard for us – for my players and the football club. But we still have a lot to take from that.”
