‘We lost a little bit of faith’ – Palace defender makes admission after heavy Spurs defeat

BY ANDREW MCSTEEN

Joachim Andersen believed that Crystal Palace lost a little bit of faith during their 4-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday evening.

Four second-half goals from Matt Doherty, Son Heung-Min and a brace from Harry Kane completely turned around the match which had seen the Eagles impress in the first half.

Jordan Ayew had come closest for the home side in the first half when his shot was well-saved by Hugo Lloris in the visitors’ goal.

Andersen flashed a shot just past the post moments later.

“It was a really good first half [and] we had some chances that we should have been able to score from,” said Andersen in Danish to Viaplay after the match.

“In the second half, they scored two quick goals out of nothing. They were clinical and we weren’t. The difference today was that they scored with their chances, because I don’t think that it was a 4-0 game.

“You know the qualities of Harry Kane – he can score a goal out of nothing. I believe that we were in the game as well, but when they scored two goals out of nothing.

“Perhaps we lost a little bit of faith in it and collapsed a bit. We should never have lost 4-0 – it’s just not good enough.”

Palace have conceded seven without reply in their last two home games, following a 3-0 Boxing Day loss to Fulham.

But they do not have long to wait to rectify their home form, with an FA Cup match-up against Southampton on Saturday next up.

“Now we have lost 3-0 and 4-0 in the last two games at home, so that’s not good enough,” said the Danish international.

“It’s really disappointing. We need to go back and work on it. We can’t let that many goals in, [if we do] then it’s difficult to win football matches. We have to be more clinical and better otherwise, we won’t win any matches.”
