Will Leaburn, Ness and Henry be under Old Trafford spotlight? Charlton boss answers that question
Dean Holden says the EFL Cup quester-final tie away at Manchester United tomorrow will be a “great night” for Charlton Athletic’s youngsters.
Miles Leaburn has featured in every game under the former Bristol City boss since he took over from Ben Garner. The 19-year-old forward has recorded a goal contribution – two goals and two assists – in the previous four outings.
Defender Lucas Ness, 20, has played the full 90 minutes in the first four games of Holden’s Charlton Athletic tenure.
Midfielder Aaron Henry, who the Addicks boss namechecked, has been in every matchday squad under Holden.
The Addicks last reached this round of the EFL Cup in 2006. They booked their place in this stage of the competition after a penalty shootout win over Premier League side Brighton at The Valley.
“Yeah, of course, but guided by the seniors around them,” said Holden when asked whether the tie away at Old Trafford presented a chance for the youngsters to showcase their talent outside of League One. “It’s always a team effort.
“I get the question about Miles. Up until now, he has had a fantastic season.
“I have been really pleased with Lucas – he just goes around his job in a quiet way. He just gets on with it and is improving all the time.
“The biggest thing is their attitudes. The two of them, in particular, and Aaron Henry, they’re like sponges – they can’t get enough of it.
“They’re the sort of players you want to work with. That was one of the biggest things that attracted me to the job, working with them young players.
“It will be a great night for them. But what we have to make sure is that because there will be so much buzz going into the game, is that once we arrive and go out on that pitch, we give a good account of ourselves. That’s the main thing.”
