Palace boss Vieira: Tyrick Mitchell needed time to “digest” recent career success
Patrick Vieira says Tyrick Mitchell will come straight back into the Crystal Palace line-up for Sunday’s clash against Chelsea after returning from his three-game suspension.
The Palace boss also admitted Mitchell needed time to “digest” the success he had in his career in recent months.
Mitchell received a red card – the first of his career – in the 3-0 defeat at home to Fulham on Boxing Day for a late challenge on Kenny Tete.
The 23-year-old has made 82 appearances for the Eagles in all competitions and became the first-team left-back under Vieira after the French World Cup winner arrived last summer.
Mitchell’s form saw the Brent-born left-back called up to the England squad, making his debut in the 2-1 win against Switzerland and his first start in the 3-0 win against the Ivory Coast.
Joel Ward and Nathaniel Clyne – both right-backs by trade – have filled in at left-back in Mitchell’s absence.
“It will be a decision that is not going to be easy,” said Vieira ahead of whether Mitchell comes straight back into the starting line-up against Chelsea.
“Wardy on the left-hand side is not his favourite position or where he feels most comfortable, but he did a good job for the team.
“With Tyrick coming back, he will start and play because he’s the best left-back that we have.
“In the last couple of games, it was difficult for him to get back to his level.
“He needed time [after the Fulham sending off] to digest the success he had in the last couple of months.
“Sometimes you need a step back to make a step forward. We never doubted his talent, he’s an important player for the football club and I’m pleased he’ll be back for an important game for us.”
