Charlton Athletic manager Dean Holden on his team coping with double injury setback in win over Barnsley

Charlton Athletic manager Dean Holden has talked about the way his side coped with setbacks during today’s 2-0 win over Barnsley.

The Addicks lost full-back Steven Sessegnon to injury before kick-off, Sean Clare starting at right-back. And then debutant Todd Kane, signed on loan from Coventry City on Tuesday, had to be replaced right near the end of the first period with a hamstring injury.

Charlton were already 1-0 ahead at that point with 19-year-old winger Tyreece Campbell scoring his first senior goal.

The Addicks made it 2-0 in the 61st minute through Crystal Palace loanee Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, he converted from close range after Macauley Bonne’s shot came back off the inside of the left post.

Barnsley hit the crossbar twice in the opening 45 minutes. Josh Benson, who scored in the reverse fixture at Oakwell, was denied from long-range before Nicky Cadden’s close-range header also came back off the woodwork.

Charlton made it three League One victories on the bounce.

Holden said: “It had a bit of everything, didn’t it? First of all I’m really pleased with the three points and the clean sheet.

“We had some adversity to deal with. Sess felt something at the back of his knee right at the end of the warm up. Sean [Clare] came into the starting 11 and we had to sort set-pieces. We were calm in that moment, no problem. I speak to the players every day about dealing with the moment in front of you. That was a prime example.

“Then we lost Todd [Kane] just before half-time. Hopefully it’s not too bad, it looks like he has some tightness in his hamstring, so we had to reshuffle.

“Barnsley had chances. I’m not going to sit here and say it was perfect, because it wasn’t – far from it – but it never is. The crossbar might still be rattling now, I don’t know and I don’t really care.

“Two fantastic goals. I’m really pleased for Tyreece. He wasn’t even in the squad in the last game because I wanted to get some minutes into his legs in our last U21 game. He is the closest we have got to Corey [Blackett-Taylor] in that position with his one-v-one ability. It showed for his goal. It was a great moment for him and his family. Another youngster coming through our academy who is doing well at first-team level. I’m sure Steve Avory and all the academy staff will toast that tonight and rightly so.

“Aaron Henry’s first pass puts Macauley in. Brilliant feel, he is such a technician Aaron. Macauley has drifted, like good strikers do, and it has dropped to him and it comes off the post and falls for Jes. I’ve just been told by their manager that he was offside. I don’t really care, Rashford was offside the other night – it’s swings and roundabouts.

“It’s a really pleasing 2-0 win.”
