Cambridge boss gives his verdict on striker’s AFC Wimbledon loan switch

Cambridge United boss Mark Bonner reckons Saikou Janneh’s loan move to AFC Wimbledon is an opportunity for the forward to earn valuable game time.

The 23-year-old joined Bonner’s side in the summer on a two-year deal after they agreed a fee with Championship side Bristol City.

Gambian attacker Janneh made six appearances and scored two goals during his four years at Ashton Gate, heading out on loan to Torquay United twice, followed up by stints at Shrewsbury and Newport County.

His most prolific spell came during his first loan with Torquay in the National League South, scoring 16 times in 28 appearances in the 2018-19 season.

Janneh made 17 appearances this season for Cambridge – scoring once. Our website exclusively revealed he was bound for the Dons.

“This is an excellent opportunity for Saikou to gain valuable game time,” Bonner told Cambridge’s website.

“As is often the case with many younger players, the importance of regular games is integral to their development.

“We believe this is the right opportunity for him to find his game rhythm and have a successful second half of the season before returning to us in the summer, better for the experience.”

There is no option to buy included in the loan deal.

Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson added: “Saikou is an exciting forward player who can play on both wings and through the centre.

“He’s different to what we’ve got already because he brings an electric pace, which allows you to get up the pitch quickly.

“He takes players on, is aggressive and gets in behind – which will help us to put the opposition on the back foot.”

Midfielder Alfie Bendle, 17, has joined National League South side Eastbourne Borough on loan for the rest of the season.
