AFC Wimbledon set to appoint Wally Downes as new manager

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Wally Downes is set to end AFC Wimbledon’s search for a new manager – officially being announced as Neal Ardley’s successor next week.

The Dons had trimmed their shortlist down to a final four which was Downes, Russell Slade, Kevin Nolan and Shaun Derry.

But Downes is expected to be appointed on a deal until the summer of 2021.

Wimbledon issued a statement yesterday. It said: “We are aware that there is extensive speculation online and in the press about the appointment of our new manager.

“We understand that fans are keen to hear formally from the club, however, an appointment has not yet been finalised.  As with all major appointments, the football club and Dons Trust boards are working through the necessary process. This has not yet been completed, so we ask fans to be patient until we are ready to make an announcement.”

The appointment of Downes, 57, sees Wimbledon once again bring in a boss who also played for the original incarnation of the club.
