Scott Fraser backed to build on impressive performances for Charlton Athletic

Scott Fraser has been challenged to build on his strong January displays after the Charlton Athletic midfielder was shortlisted for January’s League One Player of the Month.

The Scot provided a goal and assist in the 2-1 win over Lincoln at The Valley as well as netting in the 3-1 victory at Portsmouth on New Year’s Day – also striking the bar in that fixture.

Fraser scored 14 goals in 44 league games for Milton Keynes in the 2020-21 campaign, leading to a move to Ipswich Town. But the 27-year-old struggling to nail down game time for the Tractor Boys and Charlton, long-term admirers, landed him in January 2022.

Fraser missed out to Luke Leahy (Shrewsbury) for the award.

“I knew about his qualities before I came in – a fantastic technician with the ball at his feet,” Holden told the South London Press. “He can get out of tight areas. He has that element of creativity within his play where he can find a pass.

“He’s started to get into the right areas to assist and score goals now, which is something I challenged him to do.

“He’s done it in a previous role at another club where he got really high numbers, which probably led to his move in the first place.

“The nomination is well-deserved. But again there is so much more to come in his game.

“We’ve been through some of the clips from the Exeter game with the team on Tuesday morning. He takes up such good positions – can we get the ball to him two or three passes earlier? We’ve got runners with pace and he has got a wand of a left foot.

“He couldn’t do the role he is fulfulling without Dobbo (George Dobson) and Albie Morgan, in certain games, along with the centre-backs.

“I’ve been really impressed with him. He’s been a fantastic character around the place. I love his personality – bubbly, bright and very switched on when training starts, he is serious and wants it done properly. He’s got a really good attitude. The challenge is for him to keep pushing on. We need more goals and more assists from him.”

Centre-back Lucas Ness, who turned 21 on Tuesday, has won the Charlton supporters’ Player of the Month for January.

Ness played every minute in all five of their games in that period.

Ashley Maynard-Brewer was second (32 per cent) with Fraser in third (20 per cent).
