Welling United go top of National League South
An emphatic second-half performance enabled Welling United to see off Hungerford Town 3-1 and go top of National League South.
In the first half they struggled to get a grip on the game as the visitors’ four-man central midfield outnumbered Welling’s two. But when they upped the tempo in the second half their wide men were more involved and there was only ever going to be one result.
Thierry Audel had the only effort on target for either team in the first half hour but his header was tipped over by Jacob Weaver.
Welling’s next shot on target opened the scoring. Millwall loanee Danny McNamara got forward and laid it off for Nassim L’Ghoul. He found Bradley Goldberg on the edge of the area and he turned to superbly fire into the bottom corner.
Daniolo Orsi-Dadomo fired a shot wide before he set up the leveller. He sent Matt Jones away and the defence hesitated, allowing him to score inside the near post.
Weaver beat out shots from L’Ghoul and Goldberg, who then both had efforts just off target.
Brendan Kiernan had a shot saved by Weaver before L’Ghoul was just off target once more.
Welling boss Steve King made two changes that made a big difference. First he brought on Danny Mills for Matt Paterson and Montel Agyemang replaced John-Paul Kissock.
Two minutes later Welling went ahead.
Mills sent a strong header towards the far post and L’Ghoul had the desire to get there and finish despite knowing that he was going to crash into the woodwork.
L’Ghoul is not getting protection from referees and a wild challenge on him ended his afternoon with eleven minutes remaining. Gavin McCallum replaced him after his injury lay-off.
He marked his return with an assist as the three substitutes combined for a third goal in the final minute. Agyemang’s deep corner was put back across by McCallum for Mills to bundle home gleefully from close range.
