Helping pre-teenage girls navigate their teenage years

I’m a Rites for Girls facilitator and mentor based in Peckham. I’m reaching out to make readers aware of the local support that is available for pre-teen and teenage girls in South-east London.

I am starting an in-person support group for girls aged 10 to 12, called Girls Journeying Together next month.

We start with a free taster on Sunday, March 12 in Peckham for girls to come along and see what girls group is like before committing to the rest of the year.

Rites for Girls is a CIC that was founded in response to the rise in mental health issues in young children, girls in particular.

Last September the Royal College of Psychiatrists reported a record number of children being referred to mental health services – almost double pre-pandemic levels, with nearly 200,000 cases.

Mental health needs in children and young people in South-east London in specific are consistently among the highest, with reports of low self-esteem, eating disorders, bullying behaviour, stress, anxiety, school-refusing and depression.

Rites for Girls aims to change this and helps girls enter their teens feeling self-assured and supported.

Girls Journeying Together groups are for small groups of pre-teen girls (aged 10-12), meeting monthly for a year to guide them safely into adolescence.

Girls’ Net, an online six-week course for girls between the ages of eight and 18, is a restorative programme designed to age-appropriately build resilience and equip girls for times of challenge and change.

All facilitators and mentors are fully trained, enhanced DBS checked, fully insured and have had NSPCC safeguarding training.

Everyone at the South London Press thanks you for your continued support.

Former Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick has encouraged everyone in the country who can afford to do so to buy a newspaper, and told the Downing Street press briefing:

“A FREE COUNTRY NEEDS A FREE PRESS, AND THE NEWSPAPERS OF OUR COUNTRY ARE UNDER SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL PRESSURE”

If you can afford to do so, we would be so grateful if you can make a donation which will allow us to continue to bring stories to you, both in print and online.
