Millwall boss Gary Rowett: Final eight Championship fixtures are huge matches

Millwall manager Gary Rowett has described all of his club’s remaining fixtures as “huge” as they gear up for Saturday’s fixture at play-off rivals West Bromwich Albion.

Former Lions winger Jed Wallace, now on the Baggies payroll after quitting Millwall in the summer, had described this weekend’s Championship meeting as “massive”.

West Brom are five points behind Millwall, who are sixth, but have a match in hand.

Asked about Wallace’s comments, Rowett told the South London Press: “Every game is huge now. We have got eight huge games, haven’t we? If you look there are four or five teams now looking outside into the play-offs, who can’t afford to slip up and need to win games. And we are no different to that.

“We have a little buffer – but that’s not going to probably help you after the next one or two games. If you don’t get the results it is going to be pretty even and everyone is going to be in a similar position.

“Every game is massive now. For me it is not about the magnitude of the game, it’s about maintaining what you have done to get you there.

“The players understand how big the games are and they understand there is going to be a little bit more external pressure on it at this stage of the season.

“Someone like Jed, of course you have got to say that because they need to win games to get into the top six. They are a big club and that’s the expectation. It’s no different for us. We’ve got to go up there and put a performance on and get a result. We’ve got to do it in that game, we’ve got to do that in the game against Luton – we’ve got to do it in the next game after that.

“If you said you needed ‘x’ amount of points, it doesn’t really matter where the points come from – you’ve just got to get them somehow, whether that is against West Brom or someone else.

“The focus is on West Brom because it is the next game and it’s the one we’re both going to be trying to win.”
