Millwall boss Gary Rowett’s post-game assessment after Hull City defeat: We were by far the better team

Millwall manager Gary Rowett felt his side put in an “outstanding” away performance at Hull City – only lacking in goals.

The Lions had 22 attempts – six on target – and home goalkeeper Karl Darlow made a number of vital saves.

Millwall finished with an xG (expected goals) of 2.14 compared to City’s 0.92.

Adama Traore’s excellent long-distance shot sealed the win for Hull City and made sure of their Championship status for next season.

Millwall remain fifth but Preston North End, who visit The Den on Saturday, moved level on points with them and Blackburn Rovers after a 2-1 victory over relegation-threatened Reading.

“For 15 minutes Hull kept the ball away from us a little bit but didn’t really create too much,” said Rowett. “After that we were by far the better team. We passed the ball really well and got in some great positions. They have had something like six or seven shots and we, as the away team, have had 20 shots and a lot of them were really good chances. Darlow has made five or six outstanding saves.

“I’ve come off the pitch before and we’ve played really badly and we’ve taken three points. Today we were outstanding as an away team. We played really, really well today and it was just that last little moment you need to win a game. We couldn’t quite find it, no matter how many attempts we had on goal.”
