Woking 2 Welling United 0 – Wings’ winless run away stretches to eight matches

Second-placed Woking defeated sixth placed Welling United on a cold night in Surrey.

The Wings have now lost five out of five midweek games and their winless run away from home was extended to eight league and cup matches since beating Hereford at Edgar Street in the first week of October.

Clearcut chances were few and far between in the first half and in keeping with most of the football the opening goal was an ugly affair. A Woking free-kick was miss-hit then a defender’s attempted clearance was sliced over the top of Dan Wilks for Jack Cook to head into an empty net from five yards out.

Jamar Loza had a shot beaten out by Wilks and Christian Jolley fired over from the rebound. 

Danny Mills got on the end of John Paul Kissock free-kick and thought that his header had crossed the line but it was irrelevant as the flag was already up for offside.

Harvey Bradbury set up the last chance of the half but Wilks was down quickly to save Toby Edser’s shot.

After the interval Bradley Goldberg’s free-kick was beaten out by Craig Ross who has one Welling appearance on his C.V.

Woking tried to fashion a shooting chance but Welling defended well until it came to Edser to spin and shoot wide.

Welling boss Steve King made a double change introducing Brendan Kiernan and Gavin McCallum. Woking struggled to find and answer as Welling started to control the match.

Danny McNamara started to find more space to surge forward and had a shot blocked out for a corner. From McCallum’s delivery, Thierry Audel headed back across goal for Kiernan to try his luck but his effort whistled over.

Mills fired over following more good work from Millwall loanee McNamara before Josh Hill was aghast to see his header come back off the inside of the post.

Another Hill header was beaten out by Ross then Ijaha fired early before Welling were hit by a sucker-punch. With seven minutes remaining, Greg Luar lined up a shot but an attempt to block it caused it to loop up and over Wilks and into the net.

It was a cruel way to end the contest and following Oxford City’s success in the F.A. Trophy 24 hours earlier means that Welling now have a 10-day break which will allow some of their walking wounded the opportunity to rest.
