Catford Wanderers Cricket Club to officially open new cricket nets on May 8

Catford Wanderers Cricket Club are hosting the opening of their new cricket nets on May 8 at 1pm.
Kent’s Daniel Bell-Drummond, formerly a youth player at the club, will be a special guest.
Ewart Thompson, CWC secretary, said: “Six years ago the club were on the brink of folding but through the efforts of their committee, members, and support from the other sections of their sports club, they were able to keep things going.
“The nets will be central to the club’s strategy for rebuilding their youth section and getting kids from all backgrounds to engage in sports and build friendships.
“A significant number of our members are from diverse, and low socio-economic backgrounds but cricket has given them a release from the problems of day-to-day life, and a sense of enjoyment in a safe environment.”
The club were able to purchase the nets through various funding sources such as the London Marathon Charitable Trust, Sports England, and Crowdfunder.
Thompson said: “The support we got from the latter was incredibly moving.”
The club’s sports day starts at 11am and includes cricket, football, badminton and tennis. Refreshments will be available.
