Midfielder facing disciplinary action for anti-Charlton Athletic chant

Charlton are set to take disciplinary action against Alex Gilbey.

The 28-year-old midfielder is on loan at Stevenage Borough but is still contracted to the Addicks until the end of June.

Footage emerged of Gilbey joining in a song with some of the other Stevenage players, after they had sealed automatic promotion from League Two, singing: “We all hate Charlton”.

Gilbey could be fined as the South London Press understands that Addicks boss Dean Holden was made aware of the video, which appeared on social media but has subsequently been deleted.

Holden was unhappy with his conduct as the Addicks are still picking up a chunk of his salary, feeling it shows disrespect to the club and also the fanbase.

Dagenham-born Gilbey signed for Stevenage at the start of September. Charlton did have a January recall option inserted but did not choose to activate it.

Gilbey was a mainstay of Steve Evans’ side, making 44 appearances and scoring three goals.

Holden also dropped Macauley Bonne from his squad after the striker liked a couple of Ipswich Town posts following their 6-0 thrashing of the Addicks last month.

Bonne has not featured since for the South London club and is out of contract at the start of July. He agreed a mutual termination with QPR in January and returned to SE7.

  • Such an unprofessional approach by Gilby. I was a little disappointed when he went to Stevenage on loan, but if that is his attitude then so be it. Good riddance and I hope he gets a bad reception when he is at the valley next season. Very disrespectful to Charlton fans as well as the Club. Goodbye Gilby !!!
