Palace boss Hodgson asked about Riedewald and McArthur substitutions in Bournemouth victory

Roy Hodgson says it was pleasing to give Jairo Riedewald some minutes in Crystal Palace’s 2-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday.

Riedewald, 26, made his first appearance since the 3-0 defeat to Fulham on Boxing Day.

The versatile Dutch midfielder has featured 83 times for the club now in all competitions since he joined under Frank de Boer in 2017.

He came on for Will Hughes.

James McArthur also made his first appearance since the former England boss returned, replacing Cheick Doucoure in the 81st minute.

The Scottish midfielder, who has had his season disrupted by injury, is out of contract at the end of the season.

Two strikes from Eberechi Eze gave the Eagles all three points over the Cherries.

“Injury, largely for McArthur,” explained Hodgson of the 35-year-old’s absence.

“Jairo has been frozen out to some extent. Not only by the previous manager and his staff but also by us – we haven’t used him.

“But if you were to come and watch us train, you would be unbelievably impressed by Jairo Riedewald – impressed by his ability, by his determination and by his professionalism.

“We made the choice to start with Hughes in front of him, but it was nice to bring Jairo on and show what he can do.

“Quite frankly, if we had played with Jairo from the start of the game, the result would have been the same.”
