AFC Wimbledon boss Downes: Missed first-half chances cost us badly against Barnsley

BY MAX HALL

Wimbledon manager Wally Downes was left lamenting missed chances in the first half of today’s 4-1 defeat at home to in-form Barnsley.

“I’m disappointed with the result, obviously,” said the Dons boss, “but I thought we matched them from the start up until the second or third goal went in.

“We had chances in the first half when we could have taken the lead – a great save from the goalkeeper [to deny Will Nightingale] and [Jake Jervis] missed a great chance, and you can’t afford to do that against a team that’s at the top of their game and, also, at the top of the division.

“So, missing those chances gives [Barnsley] that extra impetus at the start of the second half, and when they got in the lead it was difficult to get after them.

“We can compete with teams in this division. We’re not going to be playing Barnsley, with their resources, every week. We seem to be playing teams at the top in the table every week. When we get some teams around us, perhaps our results will reflect the improvement we’re making.”
