Crystal Palace fan Ellie Scotney wins IBF world super-bantamweight title

Catford’s Ellie Scotney is the new IBF world super-bantamweight champion.

The 25-year-old won a unanimous points verdict over Australia’s Cherneka Johnson last night at Wembley Arena.

Scotney, a Crystal Palace supporter, won by scorecards of 98-92 (twice) and 97-93.

It means the former GB amateur has won major honours in just her seventh professional bout.

Scotney said: “I’m so happy, I’ve got no words. I’ll be honest – and I think Shane (McGuigan, trainer) will back me up – that was one of my bad performances. But I got the job done.

“She came and showed how tough she is. She got a bad cut but carried on fighting through.

“There’s a new kid on the block now. Towards the end I did have to bite down and have a bit of a fight. This is my debut on the world stage and it’s only going to get better.”
