Ice-hockey: Streatham have fresh suspension issues for challenging weekend
Streatham have a suspension headache for the third consecutive week with goaltender Matt Colclough the latest to be sat on the sidelines, writes David Carr.
A trip to Invicta Dynamos on Saturday is followed by a home fixture against title-chasing Basingstoke Bison.
Colclough earned a match penalty for fighting in Sunday’s 7-1 defeat to Peterborough Phantoms.
“Nate Gregory will come in and it’s a chance for him to show what he can do between the pipes,” said Cornish.
“We were very frustrated with the officiating in both games last weekend. We are not a team that plays a dirty style of hockey despite what our penalty minutes are showing.
“I coach hockey the opposite way to how I played. I have signed a quick team who are all about playing the puck and the minutes some of our players are getting is completely at odds with their character and style of play.”
Streatham lost 5-2 in Basingstoke last Saturday as a nightmare first period saw them trail 4-0 with only 20 minutes gone. A second-period revival saw Joe Allen and Ben Paynter put the RedHawks back in contention, only for referee Richard Belfitt to eject defenseman Jordan Gregory on a contentious tripping call.
This left the RedHawks with a five-minute penalty to kill and triggered an automatic suspension for the former Bracknell Hornets man.
Belfitt was back the following evening for the visit of Peterborough to Streatham Arena and ejected captain Adam Carr on a contentious high sticking call with the score at 1-0.
James Warman got the consolation for Streatham, but the main talking point was the ejection of Carr and then the usually placid Colclough who reacted to some interference in his crease by attacking James Ferrara.
RedHawks’ Alex Sampford had five stitches in his face the previous week with no call.
“The fans can see for themselves how we are playing and we need their continued support to help us climb the table and get some good vibes into the building,” said Cornish.
