Spectacular giraffes to take over town centre

An art trail celebrating diversity and creativity will see 60 giraffe sculptures taking over a town centre this summer.

As a showcase event for This is Croydon, London Borough of Culture 2023, Croydon Stands Tall will transform the boroughs town centre into an open-air art gallery.

The 10 week long art trail will open to the public on August 21, revealing 30 huge giraffe sculptures that have been designed by artists and residents joined by a herd of 30 baby giraffe sculptures that have been decorated by school children in the area and community groups.

These smaller sculptures will be placed across the town’s civic centre, libraries and shops.

The trail has been organised by Croydon Business Improvement District (BID), in collaboration with creative producers Wild in Art.

To end the trail, Croydon will host a special farewell weekend, where all the giraffe sculptures will be displayed together. Then, Croydon Stands Tall will auctioned off all the large sculptures to raise money for Crisis charity and its Croydon programme, Skylight, which offers vital help with housing, jobs, health, and wellbeing.

Christine Eyers, Director of Crisis Skylight Croydon, said:  “We’re so excited to see the trail launch this summer and to see all the giraffes, and their amazing artwork, dotted around Croydon.

“It is a real honour for Crisis to be the charity partner for such a unique event. The auction at the end will help us to continue our work, supporting people across the borough who are facing the devastating reality of homelessness.

“Through our frontline services we help people take the steps they need to rebuild their lives and leave homelessness behind for good.”
