Millwall boss Rowett on 6-1 friendly win over Bromley – and why results don’t matter in pre-season

Gary Rowett watched his Millwall side beat Bromley 6-1 in a behind-closed-doors friendly earlier this week, but the experienced Lions boss is not reading anything into the scoreline.

Summer signing Kevin Nisbet scored in the fixture at Calmont Road. Andreas Voglsammer, Tom Bradshaw, Duncan Watmore, Aidomo Emakhu and Niino Adom-Malaki were also on target.

“We had a really tough day the day before – a lot of the players were leggy,” Rowett told the South London Press. “The most important bit was that everyone came through unscathed, fitness wise, and it’s a good 45 minutes into their legs.

“The secondary bit to that is the things that we’re working on – the different formations and ways of playing that will be important during the season.

“It’s nice to win any game of football and it’s nice to score some goals, but, for me, it’s about all the other things during pre-season.

“Just like if we go to Gillingham on the weekend and they beat us, I’ll be saying the exact same thing.

“The time the results count is at the start of the league campaign. At the moment, it’s more about the learning and conditioning. It’s about making sure we’re ready to hit the ground running come August.”

Millwall play at Gillingham, managed by former Lions boss Neil Harris, on Saturday.

“It will be more of the same,” said Rowett. “I imagine it will be all the same players mixed up again. We’re looking at different combinations in forward, midfield and defensive areas. That’s part of our pre-season plan. There will be another 45 minutes for players and maybe a little bit of extra conditioning at half-time or after the game again, to make it look like 60 minutes physically.

“That’s what our aim is – working on the tactical bits we have and knowing we have to be flexible, depending on what the end of the window looks like for the team.

“That’s the primary aim. It will be a really good challenge. I’m sure Neil will have a team that will work incredibly hard and they will be doing the same work on their things.

“It will be a good game.”
