Southend boss Chris Powell not expecting repeat of Roots Hall ruckus at Charlton’s Valley

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Southend United manager Chris Powell is not expecting a repeat of the ruckus at Roots Hall which saw three players sent off when Charlton Athletic last met his side.

Tariqe Fosu saw red in the closing stages of the match, along with Shrimpers duo Mark Oxley and Michael Kightly.

“It was a game where Charlton acquitted themselves well and went 1-0 up,” said Powell.

“We got an equaliser and got ourselves back in the game, you’re thinking it is a decent point but then we concede a goal late on. That’s been the story of our season, especially at home.

“There was a bit of frustration and the game just heated up. It was mayhem. It really shouldn’t have happened and I dealt with my players accordingly. I’m sure Lee did the same as well with Fosu. We move on from it.

“It’s another game, and a huge one for both teams in different ways.

“Charlton have lost one and drawn their last two. We’ve lost our last two and we need to bounce back, so I think the game will take care of itself.

“We are playing at one of the bigger and better stadiums in the league. It’s a good crowd and a ground where players like to play. I’m hoping my team respond and turn up on the day – we need to, not just for ourselves but for our supporters.”
