‘Really tough’ – Middlesbrough boss looks ahead to Millwall season opener

Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick says today’s Championship opener against Millwall will provide a “good challenge” for his side.

The Lions head to The Riverside for their first game of the 2023-24 Championship season.

Both sides were towards the top end of the table last campaign, with Boro being knocked out of the play-offs after a semi-final defeat over two legs to Coventry.

Gary Rowett’s side beat Middlesbrough at The Den but suffered defeat on the road last season.

“Pre-season is pre-season, so you take some bits from it,” Carrick said in his pre-match press conference.

“It’s not always hugely reliable, but they will be doing the same with us – it’s obvious.

“They’re a good team – well organised and really tough to play against. They’re really effective in what they do.

“It will be a good first test for us. It will be a good challenge to see where we’re at, physically and mentally as a group.

“It’s a tough game, but we’re looking forward to it.”
