Millwall boss Gary Rowett praises ‘unpredictable’ substitute duo who combined for winner against Middlesbrough

Millwall boss Gary Rowett hailed young duo Romain Esse and Aidomo Emakhu for their role in claiming all three points in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Middlesbrough.

Esse and Emakhu were both substituted on in the 73rd minute, with Zian Flemming and Duncan Watmore making way.

The Lions took the lead six minutes later when Emakhu crossed from the left for Esse, and the U18 England international curled a fine first-time finish into the top corner to score his first goal for the Lions.

Gary Rowett’s side picked up their first win at The Riverside since 2014.

“Over the course of pre-season, they have both been very, very good – they have probably been two of our better players,” Rowett said of 18-year-old Esse and 19-year-old Emakhu.

“I could have easily put more senior players on who have played at higher levels and have more experience, but they just give you something unpredictable.

“Aidomo is pacey and has power, but he also has a very good end product.

“And Rom just has great quality. He’s just a talented, talented player.

“I thought they combined really well.

“At that point [when they were subsisted on], we maybe could have sured it up and gone for a draw, but I felt the game was there for that little bit more pace in the transition.

“Aidomo did well. He just waited for the defender – I think it was Paddy McNair – and flicks it past him. He had a lovely balance and found a great pass.

“You’re not going to find a more composed finish whether you’re 30 years old or 18 years old in the division this afternoon.

“It’s a beautiful finish. It deserved the appulse.”
