Charlton boss Dean Holden outlines team selection plans for EFL Cup clash at Newport
Charlton boss Dean Holden has said there will be changes for tomorrow’s EFL Cup first-round clash at League Two side Newport County – but insists that his side are going to Rodney Parade to try to progress through to the next round.
The Addicks kicked off their League One campaign on Saturday with a win over Leyton Orient thanks to George Dobson’s 45th-minute strike.
Charlton reached the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup last season, knocking out QPR, Walsall, Stevenage and Brighton to head to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United.
However, Erik ten Hag’s side, who went on to win the competition, beat Dean Holden’s Addicks 3-0.
Summer signings Panutche Camara and Tayo Edun both started on the bench against Orient.
Mandela Egbo was also left out of the matchday squad, with Holden confirming after the game that the former Crystal Palace youngster was fit and available for selection.
Newport suffered a 3-0 opening-day defeat to Accrington Stanley in League Two.
When the Charlton boss was asked whether he was looking to make changes for the trip to Wales, Holden said: “We have to use it for those reasons, purely because lads are not up to speed.
“The players who need minutes will get minutes. There will be changes, but I just said to the players in there [the changing room], that I don’t believe we will be weakening the team – far from it.
“We’re building a really good squad. The perception externally will be that it might look like we have made quite a few changes, but we’re going there to win the game.
“This club has not had a winning mentality for quite a while now. The reason why everybody enjoyed Old Trafford so much was because the players took care of the earlier rounds when they were not so glamorous.
“We will go there with the right attitude and hopefully win the game.”
