Lions defender pens new deal and heads out on League One loan

Alex Mitchell has signed a new deal at Millwall and headed out on loan to join League One side Lincoln.

The 21-year-old defender has had loan spells at Bromley, Leyton Orient and St Johnstone curing his Lions career.

Mitchell, who featured for Millwall during pre-season, made 29 appearances for St Johnstone last season.

Lincoln are 12th in League One after their first three outings of the 2023-24 campaign.

Gary Rowett told the South London Press: “He’s another one where he maybe wouldn’t quite get the number of starts that he needs to develop his career.

“He’s a player we all think a lot of. We felt it was a really good opportunity to go out to League One and prove himself yet again. It was important that he signed a new deal and we recognised the work that he did in pre-season and the potential that he has.

“It’s a big loan move for him. It’s one where if he goes, nails it, and performs really well, then he certainly comes into contention for our team rather than just being a part of our squad.

“There are the decisions we have to make. From his perspective, it’s a really good opportunity to once again show the next level for him.

“When you’re a young player who has gone and played 30 to 40 games, you don’t want to sit around just playing two or three.

“He understands and recognises that with another season of playing games and playing in League One, a slightly different level, he can show what he can do and then be a lot closer to impacting our first team.”
