Paloma, Beckenham… a restaurant with a special occasion feel about it
The first time I found a restaurant named Paloma, my best friend laughed heartily at my excitement.
Those with unusual names will understand how rare it is to find anything with your name on – a pen, cup, or lunchbox would be a start but a restaurant?
It doesn’t get more special than this.
A friend suggested we went to Paloma in Beckenham and my heart was lifted.
I was unsure exactly what to expect but the Latin description on the website gave a good hint.
It’s actually Central American-inspired so I was hoping to find ceviche on the menu.
It went one better with a sashimi platter – tuna, salmon and seabream, beautifully presented, with pickled ginger and enough wasabi to well and truly blow your hat off.
The menu skips across European countries, which no doubt reflects the Latin influences.
Starters of Padron Peppers and Baked Provolone looked good.
There’s yet more Asian influence with Short Rib Bao Buns.
Unsurprisingly, steak looms large for the main course, Argentine, to be precise.
There’s every cut imaginable, all the way up to fillet but all served with chimichurri.
Paloma has a special occasion feel about it, with luxury and highly stylised interior but the location makes it feel accessible.
It certainly appeals to the ladies that lunch crowd and those sharing exploits on Instagram.
There are a few secluded areas that lend themselves well to group celebrations.
The cocktail list is impressive and leisurely summer evenings are no doubt popular here.
