Paddy McCarthy asked about penalty decision in Crystal Palace’s 3-1 defeat at Aston Villa
Paddy McCarthy was asked about the penalty decision that allowed Aston Villa to go 2-1 up in their 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.
Referee Darren England awarded Villa a spot-kick in added time when Chris Richards was adjudged to have brought down Ollie Watkins inside the area.
The referee spent a considerable amount of time looking at the replays of the incident before sticking with his original decision.
Douglas Luiz stuck the penalty away past Sam Johnstone to put Villa 2-1 up.
Leon Bailey added Villa’s third in the 101th minute of the game.
“If it takes five minutes to make a decision, that tells you everything you need to know,” said McCarthy, who was standing in for Roy Hodgson as the Palace boss took ill before the game.
“There are people in the studio watching it who have asked him to go and have a look to, I would imagine, change his mind.
“Whatever he has seen on the monitor hasn’t changed his mind.”
