Construction of dozens of new homes begins

The construction of new affordable homes has started in Charlton.

Woodpecker Gardens is the second site being developed by Meridian Home Start, which is funded by Greenwich council.

The 32 new homes will be rented to working residents in the borough at discounted prices and are part of Meridian’s development scheme to build 230 new homes across the borough.

Meridian Home Start was set up by Greenwich council to provide high-quality, affordable homes for local working families to rent, and operates independently of the council, which means it is exempt from government restrictions on borrowing.

Council leader Cllr Danny Thorpe and Cllr Chris Kirby, cabinet member for housing, visited site to see for themselves how the construction work was progressing. The site is scheduled to be completed by this December.

The Jack’s Acre site in Eltham is also part of Meridian’s scheme and its first tenants are due to be moving in around June 2019.

Cllr Thorpe said: “Through our partnership with Meridian Home Start we can increase the supply of genuinely affordable homes for residents in the borough. The council takes seriously its commitment to increasing the supply of affordable homes and this is a great way of helping deliver on that promise.”
