‘We missed many chances to kill the game’ – Fulham boss Silva on EFL Cup win over Norwich City

Marco Silva felt his Fulham side should have made easier work of their 2-1 win against Norwich City in the third round of the EFL Cup.

The Whites progressed to the fourth round for just the second time in the last nine seasons, but the Portuguese boss was convinced it should have been a more comfortable night.

Goals from Carlos Vinicius and Alex Iwobi ensured victory for Fulham despite Norwich substitute Borja Sainz pulling a goal back for the visitors.

“We missed many chances to kill the game,” said Silva. “Until you take the hope and enthusiasm [away] from these kind of teams, the game is always open.

“I think everyone enjoyed the game but in some moments when you are winning you should have more control. We gave them belief.

“We have created a big number of chances, we have to be more ruthless. We need to be more assertive in moments.”

The win ensured Fulham extended their impressive record against Norwich to just one defeat in the last 23 encounters, and they have now not lost to the Canaries at Craven Cottage since January 1986.

They will take on Norwich’s local rivals Ipswich Town in the next round of the competition, and Silva said he will continue to approach the competition with respect.

“Our aim is to keep playing in the competition,” he said.  “We made seven changes, but we take the competition very seriously. We have a really competitive squad and everyone deserves to play. In some moments we have to rotate.”
